Deputy Premier reaffirms Qatar's support for Darfur

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud has reaffirmed Qatar's support for the people of Darfur describing it as the State's duty.

Speaking to the Qatar News Agency (QNA) on his return from Sudan, where he chaired the ninth meeting of the committee tasked with following up the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), al-Mahmoud said the peace process in Darfur is moving in the right direction, adding that development is the basis of stability and peace in the region.

He added that Qatar has donated $88.5mn that it pledged in New York two months ago with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the early recovery programme in Darfur.

He described as good and fruitful the ninth meeting of the committee tasked with following up on the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).

During the meeting, which was held on Monday under his chairmanship in South Darfur's capital of Nyala, members of the committee stressed the importance of DDPD as a choice of Darfur's people to achieve peace in the region, al-Mahmoud said.

He noted that the parties of the document - the Sudanese government, Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM), and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) - have made their observations and comments on the progress and expressed their satisfaction at what has been accomplished.

Al-Mahmoud said he thanked the Sudanese government under the leadership of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for offering 107bn Sudanese pounds as a large part of what it pledged in DDPD for development in Darfur, adding that the Darfur Regional Authority is satisfied with the ongoing development projects there.

Meanwhile, before he left Khartoum, HE al-Mahmoud met Al-Haj Sidiq Adam Wadaa, chairman of the Darfur-Darfur Dialogue and Consultation (DDDC) implementation committee, who is also head of the committee for contact with non-signatory movements to join the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.

Wadaa briefed al-Mahmoud on the meetings of the committee with some non-signatory movements. Qatar's Ambassador to Sudan Rashid bin Abdurrahman al-Nuaimi attended the meeting.

Al-Mahmoud was seen off at Khartoum Airport by Sudanese Minister of the Council of Ministers Ahmed Omar, Minister of Health and Secretary General of the Liberation and Justice Movement Bahar Idris Abu Gardah, Head of Darfur Peace Follow-up Office Amin Hassan Omar and Qatar's ambassador to Khartoum.
