Qatar- Tala'a to test falcons' ability to identify location of prey

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) One hundred competitors are participating in the Tala'a event which begins today at the sixth Qatar Falcons and Hunting Festival in Sabkhat Marmi in Mesaieed.

Divided into four groups of 25, the falcons will compete in the exciting category which tests their ability to identify the location of their prey.

An electronic Habari bird (or bustard) is used in place of a real bird. It looks like a real bird in terms of shape, size and colour.

It is put about one kilometre away and the time begins from the moment the falcon is released.

Ali bin Nouro Al Marri, a member of the event's organising committee, said the panel will ensure that everything is prepared when the event starts at 6am.

He urged participants to be at the site on time.

The competition will be particularly strong this year, Al Marri said, given that the festival is in its sixth edition, and organisers have noted the ever-improving standard at which hunters have been training and competing with their falcons over the years.

Meanwhile, two new winners moved past the eighth round of Hudud Al Tahaddi Challenge yesterday as the falcons Marmi and Hazam, owned by Salem Mubarak Mohammed Al Shahwani and Saleh Nasser Al Shahwani, respectively, caught the homing pigeons they chased during the event, following an exciting chase through the air above Sabkhat Marmi.

On the sidelines of the festival, a shooting event attracted a large number of visitors, according to Ahmed Mubarak Al Kuwari, the event's organiser. It is being held from 9am to noon daily and shooters target plates flung into the air within the shooting range.
