Dubai's affordable housing proposal an excellent step: paper

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) A UAE paper has said that the Dubai government's proposal to create adequate affordable housing for mixed income groups is a great move that will ensure that the Dubai's socio-economic progress is prevented from a skew as the emirate heads towards Vision 2021 and beyond.

"At present, the availability of this class of housing is arguably wanting and as a result, a significant percentage of the mixed income group population lives far away from their place of work, having to commute long distances to work and back, which places an enormous stress on the civic infrastructure and environment," said Gulf News in its editorial on Tuesday.

It continued, "This also has a negative impact on an individual's quality of life when measured in terms of the volume of traffic, pollution, stress and wasted man hours because urban planning and the 'liveability' factor of an individual are linked." "The stronger the synergy between a city and its facilities and resources, the higher is the 'liveability' factor. With middle income groups forming the biggest chunk of the urban mass, and being significant contributors to economic progress, their quotidian wellness is dependent on the degree of availability of affordable housing." The daily concluded by saying, "In fact, it defines the 'liveability' factor. Therefore, the Dubai Municipality's decision to look into this aspect is a great prognosis for its long-term sustainability and environmental health. And as with all things on such a vast scale, this proposal too will take time to materialise, but for the thousands of middle-income Dubai residents, the wait would be well worth it."
