UAE moves to strengthen its environmental health: paper

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) A UAE paper has said that the Federal National Council's debate on a draft law to tackle environmental crimes in the UAE will be the proverbial stitch in time as the UAE heads towards its Vision 2021.

"The bill, to introduce major changes in the UAE Environmental Protection Law of 1999 and impose harsh penalties on offenders who pollute ground water resources of the UAE, is timely and well conceived," said Gulf News in its editorial on Monday.

It continued, "In throwing the net far and wide to draw in businesses across free zones in the country to watch for tainting of ground water resources and soil and air pollution, the bill is correctly addressing the fallout of rapid progress, which if left unchecked, can debilitate the country's environmental quality." "The UAE University should also be commended for its recent studies on the deterioration of air quality in UAE's remote areas due to quarrying and its hazardous impact on people's health." "Driven by the concerns raised by such reports, the UAE is using its advantage of being a young country and getting it right from the start by putting prevention, rather than cure, at the core of its environmental health," concluded the Dubai-based daily.
