UAE- Gujarat NGOs tell CEOs not to sign deals at summit

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The NGOs cautioned the CEOs against risking your capital at grand events meant to delude you and pointed out that several MOUs were signed at earlier summits but very few had been executed due to resistance from peoples movements.

Leaders of armers fishermen landless labourers and other hard-pressed villagers affected by ‘mindless industrialisation’ in Gujarat have urged top-drawer business leaders coming for a global international investors’ conclave beginning in Gandhinagar near Ahmedabad not to sign any agreements before giving them a patient hearing.

Even as the Congress in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled state has called for a statewide shutdown on Saturday and farmers have threatened to disrupt the three-day Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit beginning on Sunday scores of activists and non-government organisations (NGOs) have in an open letter to the CEOs appealed to them to ‘spare rural livelihoods’.

“The Government of Gujarat’s (GOG) blind race towards mindless industrialization because of crony capitalism has endangered traditional livelihoods and rendered these people unemployed and unemployable.’ say the 101 signatories and request the CEOs not to enter into any agreements without interacting with them.

The NGOs cautioned the CEOs against “risking your capital at grand events meant to delude you” and pointed out that several MOUs were signed at earlier summits but very few had been executed due to resistance from people’s movements.

The letter signed also by former ministers editors and social activists from all communities said that farmers’ resources (land water coasts) that were proposed to be sacrificed by the government were part of a well-thought-out ‘crony capitalist ideology’.

“Hundreds of NGOs are already opposing extremely strongly the MOUs/Agreements signed (so far) which not only affect their livelihoods but also their sense of dignity. People’s movements will be launched across the country to oppose the fake promises made by Shri Narendra Modi and his Government.’ the letter said.

The signatories who also include Gandhians environmentalists RTI activists and trade union leaders even offered to “send to you some examples of the unfair and unjust economic policies that Shri Narendra Modi has attempted to execute in the state as the Chief Minister but failed to do so because of massive resistance of the people.”
