Manhattan court sentences Abu Hamza to life in prison

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Mustafa Kamel Musatafa, known as Abu Hamza Al-Masri, has been sentenced by Manhattan Federal Court to life in prison.

The US attorneyآ's office of the Southern District of New York said in a statement that Abu Hamza was convicted after trial of multiple counts of providing support to Al-Qaeda.

Charges were based on participating in a deadly hostage-taking in Yemen, conspiring to establish a terrorism training camp in the US, and sending one of his followers to train and fight with Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, the statement added.

Abu Hamza, who was extradited from Britain to the Southern District of New York in October 2012, was found guilty on May 19, 2014, following a four-week jury trial, of each of the 11 charges he faced.

Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara said "Abu Hamza's blood-soaked journey from cleric to convict, from Imam to inmate, is now complete." In May, he added, after a fair and public trial, a jury pronounced Abu Hamza guilty for his leadership and support of, as well as participation in, terrorist activities, ranging from a fatal hostage-taking in Yemen to establishing a terrorist training camp in Oregon in the US to sending a follower to aid Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.

After years of fighting extradition, Abu Hamza finally faced justice, as all those who engage in terrorism against innocent civilians must, in the US, and all around the globe, as the terrible events in Paris remind us, Bharara said.

The Assistant Attorney General John Carlin said "Abu Hamza is an unrepentant all-purpose terrorist." With todayآ's sentence, he said, Abu Hamza is being held accountable for the many ways in which he supported terrorism and other terrorists through much of his life, including his role in a hostage-taking in Yemen, his plot to create a terrorist training camp on US soil, and his facilitation of violent jihad in Afghanistan.

This case was charged over 10 years ago and was tried after years of extradition proceedings, he added.
