'Budapest Hotel' leads BAFTA noms

(MENAFN- Arab Times) LOS ANGELES/LONDON Jan 9 (Agencies): Wes Anderson's 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' scored a grand slam at the 68th annual British Academy Film Awards nominations on Friday. 'Budapest Hotel' led all BAFTA honorees with 11 nominations in total while 'Birdman' and 'The Theory of Everything' also impressed with 10 nods each. 'The Imitation Game' followed with nine noms.

In the best film category 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' will face opponents 'Birdman' 'Boyhood' 'The Imitation Game' and 'The Theory of Everything.' Anderson who has never won a BAFTA award landed a best director mention alongside 'Birdman's' Alejandro G. Inarritu 'Boyhood' filmmaker Richard Linklater 'The Theory of Everything's' James Marsh and 'Whiplash's' Damien Chazelle.

In the fight for best leading actor Ralph Fiennes ('The Grand Budapest Hotel') takes on Benedict Cumberbatch ('The Imitation Game') Eddie Redmayne ('The Theory of Everything') Michael Keaton ('Birdman') and Jake Gyllenhaal ('Nightcrawler').

The best actress category features Amy Adams ('Big Eyes') Felicity Jones ('The Theory of Everything') Julianne Moore ('Still Alice') Reese Witherspoon ('Wild') and Rosamund Pike ('Gone Girl').

One notable omission from Friday's nominations was Ava DuVernay's 'Selma.' Despite its recent momentum in the awards race the Martin Luther King drama failed to score a single nomination.

Sneaking into another high-profile ceremony 'Nightcrawler' boosted its awards profile with nominations for stars Jake Gyllenhaal Rene Russo and an original screenplay nod for Dan Gilroy.

Meanwhile Sundance darling 'Whiplash' drummed up four BAFTA nods in total including best director original screenplay editing and sound.

BAFTA film awards host Stephen Fry and 'The Hunger Games' actor Sam Claflin announced the nominations on Friday.

Redmayne said his acting nomination was 'beyond imagination.' He insisted he feels no rivalry with Cumberbatch nominated for playing World War II code-breaker Alan Turing in 'The Imitation Game.' That film received nine nominations.

'One can try and create a rivalry but it will not happen!' Redmayne said from Los Angeles. 'We both absolutely understand people wanting to pitch us against each other but we are old old friends and I think he is the most wonderful actor. He is sensational in 'The Imitation Game' and I love watching him.'

The separate category of best British picture includes 'The Imitation Game' and 'The Theory of Everything' alongside tense Northern Ireland drama '71' alien chiller 'Under the Skin' and animated ursine adventure 'Paddington.'

The British prizes are seen as an indicator of likely success at Hollywood's Academy Awards whose nominees are announced next week.

This year's awards will take place on Feb 8 at London's Royal Opera House.
