Dubai — Al Ain forward Asamoah Gyan was the fourth best striker on the entire planet in 2014 according to the acclaimed French football magazine L’Equipe. The former Sunderland frontman netted 22 goals for The Boss in the Arabian Gulf League (AGL) and 12 strikes in the Asian Champions League.

Gyan’s impressive exploits in the final third of the pitch didn’t end there either with him notching a further six efforts as Ghana qualified for the forthcoming African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea and registering thrice in the UAE President’s Cup.

The Black Stars captain’s formidable form ensured only Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo (61 goals in 2014) Lionel Messi (58 goals in 2014) of Barcelona and little-known Jonathan Soriano (55 goals in 2014) from Red Bull Salzburg finished above him in the global pecking order.

He also became the leading-scorer for Africa at World Cup finals as his penetrative performances in Brazil this past summer took him beyond the prior marker laid down by iconic Cameroonian legend Roger Milla.

Gyan who is currently preparing for the African Nations Cup with his native country at a training camp in Spain tweeted his appreciation for the recognition yesterday (Thursday) with a single word: ‘Tanx’ (Thanks/sic).

The tweet also contained a link to the story on his own official website (www.asamoahgyan3.com) where it was seemingly made abundantly clear that the striker — or his assembled entourage — harbours some resentment that he isn’t acknowledged in similar fashion in his continents.

In two paragraphs likely to have been read and sanctioned by Gyan the story continued: “Despite the impressive scoring record for both club and country the former Sunderland striker was excluded from CAF’s (Confederation of African Football’s) three-man shortlist for the 2014 Africa Footballer of the Year Award. “Gyan’s omission has attracted massive criticism globally as it mocks the credibility of Africa’s individual top prize award.”

Meanwhile Gyan has also announced he is putting his career behind the microphone on hold until after he hangs up his boots.

The player — who goes by the name ‘Baby Jet’ in music industry cycles — has had three hit singles with his long-time friend and collaborator Theophilus Tagoe aka ‘Castro’ in recent years.

However Castro’s mysterious disappearance in July led to sensationalist headlines and stories that Gyan had somehow been involved in his alleged ‘killing’ as part of a ‘ritual sacrifice’ — claims Gyan has staunchly denied ever since.

“I have to just stay out a bit maybe until the end of my career and after football try to do something with my music” he explained.

“Sometimes at my leisure time I try to write something. I’ve got a passion for it also despite what happened to our friend (Castro).”
