Ahmedabad — The Congress in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Gujarat has given a call for a statewide shutdown on Saturday a day prior to the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit while farmers and NGOs in the state will take out a protest march to the summit venue in Gandhinagar near Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Gujarat Congress president Arjun Modhwadia told journalists that the BJP government was wasting tax payers’ money at a time when farmers were committing suicides suffering due to low minimum support price for their produce.

While three debt-ridden ryots have ended their life in the past one month farmers’ associations backed by the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party say 692 sons of the soil have committed suicide in Gujarat between 2003 and 2012 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister.

Modhwadia told Khaleej Times that all the villages towns and small cities would join the shutdown but four major cities of Ahmedabad Surat Rajkot and Vadodara had been exempted as NRIs attending the two international events would be stranded.

The Congress which has supported the call of various farmers’ bodies to lead a march to the summit venue on Sunday will also protest the summit in front of Gandhi Ashram on January 12 and January 13 despite denial of permission.

Last week in a 15-point charter of demands released by a dozen farmers’ associations from various parts of Gujarat farmers had warned the Anandi Patel government that if it failed to give a written assurance accepting their demands by January 7 farmers would not allowed to hold the summit.

The main demand of the share-croppers is a substantial increase in minimum support prices of cotton and groundnut.
