U.N. Chief Speaks with Democratic Republic of Congo President


(MENAFN- Saudi Press Agency) U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke with Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President Joseph Kabila by telephone Wednesday, the United Nations said.
According to a U.N. statement, Ban appealed for decisive action against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) after it failed to surrender on time.
Ban reiterated that the FDLR has €Åfailed to deliver on its promise to disarm and that the deadline of January 2 had expired without significant results,€€Œ the statement said.
The U.N. chief welcomed Kabila€„¢s assurance that his government is prepared to take action and noted that the U.N. Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) is ready to engage in operations alongside the Congolese military (FARDC).
