Police identify two suspects in 'Charlie Hebdo' shooting

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French Police have identified two potential suspects in the deadly shooting that killed 12 people and wounded eight others at the satirical magazine "Charlie Hebdo" on Wednesday, the General Directorate for the National Police (DGPN) said Wednesday night.

A call for witnesses and a manhunt is underway for two brothers, 32-year-old Sherif Kouachi and 34-year-old Said Kouachi who are believed to be on video footage taken at the scene of the crime.

Police sources also said that the ID card of Said Kouachi was found in a getaway car hijacked at the scene and abandoned in another part of Paris later in the day.

At least one of the Kouachi brothers is known to have served time in jail on several occasions and had links with a network sending "foreign fighters" to Iraq.

Police have widely published photos of the Kouachi brothers with a warning that they are armed and dangerous and they have asked witnesses to come forward with information.

"Several arrests" were made overnight among people thought to have links with extremist groups, Prime Minister Manuel Valls said on "RTL" radio Thursday morning, without giving additional details.

A third suspect in the shooting is already being interviewed by police but his role in the killings is not yet clear, police said.

"Charlie Hebdo" over several years had received threats from extremist groups linked with Al-Qaeda and the attackers Wednesday claimed on video footage that they were from Al-Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula (AQAP) when they were leaving the scene of the crime. But no group has publicly claimed responsibility for Wednesday's act.
