UNDP elects Guatemala as President for 2015

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the UN Ambassador Luis Fernando Carerra was elected Wednesday as the President of the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Executive Board; the Organization's governing body, for 2015.

The President and four Vice-Presidents are elected by their respective regional groups to oversee the workings of the Board, including preparation and organization of Board meetings, facilitation of transparent decision-making and promoting dialogue, the UNDP said in a press release.

The new appointments come at a pivotal time, as the world faces major development challenges in 2015, with the international community set to adopt a set of Sustainable Development Goals to follow the Millennium Development Goals and work towards a global agreement on climate change, it added.

The 36-member Executive Board is mandated by the UN General Assembly to provide inter-governmental support to and overall supervision of the activities of UNDP, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the UN Office for Project Service (UNOPS).

Newly-elected Carerra has served as his country's Minister for Foreign Affairs.
