Qatar- Motorists told to keep off parking slots for disabled

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Ministry of Interior has warned that strict action will be taken against motorists parking their vehicles at slots reserved for people with special needs.

"More than a traffic violation, it shows how a person treats and respects the rights of others, especially those who require special consideration.

"Remember that traffic police are taking strict action against those violating this rule and parking their vehicles at parking slots reserved for people with special needs," the ministry said on its Facebook page.

The ministry also it is monitoring the increasing number of vehicles parked at such slots.

Qatar has many parking spaces for people with special needs and parking in a disabled bay without permit attracts a fine of QR500.

For a disabled parking permit, it is necessary to obtain a letter from a hospital consultant. Upon submitting the letter at the Traffic Department, a permit could be obtained for people with special needs. The ministry has requested the public to share opinions and suggestions about vehicles parked at slots designated for people with special needs.

One commentator said, "These slots (allocated for people with special needs) at Hamad Hospital are mostly always occupied by others for their convenience."

However, another commentator said, "I always found these spaces are empty and was impressed that people respect that these are purely for people with special needs. This isn't always the case in other Middle East countries."

But some motorists say at some parking spaces the slots for people with special needs are not clearly differentiated and lead to confusion. "I was a victim" The signage for people with special needs was placed in between two parking slots, so I mistakenly parked in one and was given a sticker for violation," said one commentator.
