Saudi- Braille forms audio ATMs to fight fraud under study
(MENAFN- Arab News) Saudi banks are studying the possibility of introducing Braille forms and Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) with audio instructions to improve their services for people with visual disabilities and help counter fraudsters.
Talat Hafiz secretary general of the media and banking awareness committee of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) revealed this at a seminar on fraud prevention organized by the financial securities committee of the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday night.
He said SAMA launched the study because it had received a proposal on the issue from several individuals and organizations representing people with visual impairment.
'Protecting them should be our concern because retail banking financial fraud is becoming increasingly a worrying problem in the Kingdom. Every day our bank customers whether normal or blind are subjected to almost 14 fraud attempts from within the Kingdom and abroad' he said.
Hafiz advised people with visual disabilities to be cautious in their financial dealings. 'When coming to bank counters or ATMs they should always be accompanied by trustworthy persons immediately report lost cards or any exposure to fraud. They should not disclose bank account information to strangers or untrustworthy relatives or acquaintances directly or online' he said.
Mohammad Siraj director of the anti-fraud unit at Arab National Bank said fighting fraud requires the cooperation of the bank and client. He said criminals use various methods to rob people including stealing identities forging documents sending messages on false enrichment schemes and through fraudulent electronic transfers.
He said customers must keep all their data confidential. They should also only deal with bank employees keep their ATM card numbers in a safe place and review all their accounts periodically. They should also use safe computers for their Internet banking and notify their banks if they lose their ATM cards and refrain from any interaction with strangers.
