Weather Outbreak Spikes Tornado Shelter Demand Early in 2015

(MENAFNEditorial)

After a line of severe storms traveled thru the South on Saturday and Sunday a number of residents look to add Tornado Shelters or Storm Shelters to their homes and small businesses.  At least 10 confirmed tornadoes struck the South damaging homes and injuring an infant.  This severe weather outbreak more than doubles the number of tornadoes that were experienced in January of 2014.  This year could prove to be very volatile.

In Mississippi six tornadoes were spawned out of Saturday’s storms.  Numerous homes in Rose Hill were damaged along with down communications and power lines.  Late Sunday afternoon the National Weather Service confirmed that an EF2 tornado had left widespread damage including the destruction of 10 homes.  An EF1 tornado traveled from Chunky to Meehan passing just north of Interstate 20 near Meehan.  An EF0 tornado was confirmed to touchdown near the Flint Hill community north of Caledonia in Lowndes County.  A pair of EF1 tornadoes touched down outside of Mount Olive.  One of these tornadoes damaged a mobile home roof.

Alabama suffered damage from two EF0 tornadoes that were confirmed in Dale County on Sunday morning.  One damaged structures near county roads 55 and 9 while Dale County High Schools baseball fields sustained damage from the second tornado.

On Saturday evening a movement of severe storms struck Tuscaloosa County and injured an infant.  Tuscaloosa news reports that a tree limb crashed thru the home’s roof and struck the infant.

Residents of Georgia suffered severe thunderstorms damaging a roof blowing over six shipping containers and knocking out the power for at least 1600 residents late Sunday afternoon.  Straight line winds may have destroyed a number of trees throughout Chatham County according to the Chatham County Emergency Management Agency.  The National Weather Service reported a possible tornado was spotted 3 miles east of Alma Sunday afternoon.  A mobile home was destroyed injuring two people.  Less than two weeks ago a round of storms and tornadoes caused damage throughout Mississippi killing five and injuring 50 across the south.

Typically March April and Mary are the busy months of tornado season but over the years tornado season has been extended due to occurrences around the country in winter months. Now tornadoes are seen year round and in areas that are not considered high risk. Many people do not have a safe place to go in their home and the safest place to be in a tornado is in an underground tornado shelter designed to protect you in high wind speeds.
