Panel discusses trade, new air route between Oman and Iran


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman represented by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry hosted the 15th session of the Omani-Iranian Joint Economic Committee at Grand Hyatt Muscat on Wednesday. 

H E Dr Ali bin Masoud bin Ali al Sunaidy Minister of Commerce and Industry led the Omani delegation while Eng Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh Iranian Minister of Trade Industry and Mining led the visiting side. Government representatives and businessmen from both sides took part in the session to discuss important issues including trade exchanges said H E Dr Sunaidy. He said although the value of trade between the two countries has increased from about RO225mn in 2012 to about RO340mn in 2013 the figure was still low compared to the value of imports of both countries. The meeting also discussed cooperation in air transport with both sides agreeing to add another city connected by air after work on the Sohar airport concludes. Currently there is only one air route - between Muscat and Tehran.

H E Dr Sunaidy said the Ashgabat Agreement enhances trade between the two countries. The two sides also considered the possibility of signing a vet and agricultural quarantine agreement. Oman imports meat poultry and eggs from Iran.

At the meeting Iranian businessmen showed interest in setting up industries on spare parts household appliances vehicles ethylene propylene aluminium and steel in Duqm. The minister pointed out that there are 259 Omani-Iranian joint companies with Iranians owning between 60 to 70 per cent of shares of them. But now the focus is on direct investment.

The possibility of an Iranian hospital in Barka was also discusses besides cooperation in police customs housing energy marine transport communications tourism and sports.
