Stage set for Qatar Open

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) More than 126 golfers will battle for top honours at this week's Qatar Open where the winner will qualify for the 2015 Qatar Masters.

This was announced by Qatar Golf Association (QGA) President Hassan Al Naimi at the Doha Golf Club (DGC) yesterday.

"This week we will be hosting what we hope will be the biggest edition of Qatar Open in its 29-year history," Al Naimi said.

"Golfers from 35 countries will feature at the event where the winner will go directly into the Qatar Masters," Al Naimi said.

"The top 60 golfers will make it to the last round on January 10, at DGC," Al Naimi added.

According to Fahed Al Naimi, Secretary General, QGA, the event has attracted golfers from around the world.

"According to the list we have right now, 63 golfers have been registered from Doha. Sixty three golfers from the region and other countries will also play at Qatar Open," Fahed said.

Fahed said two top Qatari players at Qatar Open will also make it to the playing list of the 2015 Qatar Masters, a European Tour event to be held later this month.

The closing ceremony of the event will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday.

Chris Myers, General Manager, QGA, said: "The clubhouse hasn't looked so pristine in the last 6-7 years. We have the everything ready and I am sure the players will enjoy a great weekend of golf."

Myers added: "The event is open to all amateur golfers who are members of recognized clubs or societies with a handicap of 9 or below."

All competitors must register in person at DGC by today, officials said yesterday.

The tournament draw will displayed at the clubhouse today, QGA said yesterday.

Briton Max Williams won the event in 2013 and 2014.

Qatar's A Al Boainin won the event in 1893.

Scores at the three-day event will be based on a 54-hole stroke play format.

Sponsors of the event include Qatar Armed Forces, Qatar Olympic Committee, QGA, InterContinental Doha, Al Muftah Rent-A-Car and DGC.
