Qatar- Al Kubaisi bags QR100,000 with his falcon


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Mukhtar, a falcon owned by Mohammed bin Ghanem Al Kubaisi, emerged the first winner of the Hudud Al Tahaddi challenge yesterday at the Qatar International Falcon and Hunting Festival at Sabkhat Marmi near Sealine in Mesaieed.

Mukhtar managed to catch a homing pigeon by interrupting its flight and causing it to land, thus signaling its success and qualifying its owner for a prize of QR100,000 as well as the chance to win a new Lexus.

Kubaisi expressed his delight in winning Hudud Al Tahaddi challenge, which sees falcons seeking to obstruct the flight of homing pigeons, especially trained to fly to another site many kilometres away.

He dedicated this victory to his fellow falconers and the event's organisers, adding that "all who have participated in actualising this edition of this important festival are winners."

Hundreds of spectators, some of whom came from other countries just to see the festival, witnessed yesterday's competitions.

They lauded the festival as an important means of keeping this traditional hobby alive and transmitting it to new generations.

The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd also visited the Festival yesterday. He was presented a memorial shield by Al Gannas Association and festival Chairman Ali bin Khatim Al Muhashadi. The sixth edition of the Qatar Falcons and Hunting Festival is being organised by the Gannas Society under the patronage of H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
