Ahmedabad — The Bharatiya Janata Party-controlled Gujarat government and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) were on Tuesday heading for a showdown in the state ahead of the two all-important global events being held in the state capital of Gandhinagar near Ahmedabad.

The VHP which had been sidelined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 13-year rule as Gujarat chief minister for 13 years has in a bid to revive its campaigns in the saffron stronghold has organised a ‘Hindu Sammelan” in a communally sensitive locality of Ahmedabad on January 11 when Modi will also inaugurate the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit.

With the three-day annual Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas also opening in Gandhinagar on Wednesday the police have still not granted permission to hold the VHP event where the its firebrand leader Pravin Togadia known for his rabble-rousing speeches.

No wonder Hindu activists are fretting and fuming over the indecision of the authorities till the eleventh hour.

A VHP leader said that the event was part of Parishad’s golden jubilee celebrations planned all over the country well in advance and held out a threat to kick up a big row if the permission was not granted.

The VHP was forced to change its original venue at Shahibaug to Shahpur because of tight security in view of presence of scores of VVIPs visiting Gandhinagar for the summit.

However it has distributed thousands of leaflets with a prominent picture of Togadia with an appeal to attend the its Hindu sammelan and take a pledge for “security of Hindu Hindu prosperity and respect for Hindu”.

The leaflets says that the VHP meet has been organised to press its demands “to stop conversion love jihad cow slaughter and construct a magnificent Ram Mandir and declare India a Hindu nation”.

A senior Gujarat government official told Khaleej Times that VHP was unlikely to be given permission for holding the Hind convention in a Muslim-dominated locality like Shahpur and would be asked to change the venue or dates.

“Obviously both the state and federal administrations would not like to see trouble during the summit which will be attended by many of the world’s top political leaders and head honchos of global companies” he said.
