EU declines to comment on Greek scenarios

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The European Union (EU) Monday declined to comment on western media reports and speculations that a Greek exit from the eurozone is possible if the leftist Syriza party wins the upcoming Greek elections on 25 January and stops paying the country's debts.

"As you know we don't comment on rumors and speculations. The only statement that matters is the statement of the Greek voters on 25 January," Annika Breidhardt, a spokesperson for the European Commission, told a news conference here today.

She noted that under the EU treaty, "euro membership is irrevocable." The Greek government announced snap elections after the Greek parliament in December failed to elect a new President.

The latest poll published in the Greek press gives Syriza 30.4 percent against 27.3 percent for centre-right New Democracy party.

The German magazine in Der Spiegel has reported that Chancellor Angela Merkel could be ready to accept a Greek exit from the eurozone.

In reaction, the president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, Monday stated that "German right-wing forces trying to act like a sheriff in Greece or any other member states are not only unacceptable but above all wrong. These attitudes can only produce feelings of anger and repulsion towards the European Union among European citizens." "A hypothetical Greek exit from the eurozone is just not an option. Greece's membership of the euro is irreversible. Moreover, it could create a very dangerous domino effect," he warned in a statement.
