US "deeply troubled" by Palestinian ICC bid

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US Monday said it stands firmly against what it described as a unilateral move by the Palestinian Authority to join the International Criminal Court (ICC), and suggested Congress may cut off US aid to the Palestinians if their membership is approved.

"We're deeply troubled by the Palestinian action regarding the ICC. Hard as it is, all sides need to find a way to work constructively and cooperatively together to lower tensions, reject violence and find a path forward," State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters.

"This action is entirely counterproductive and does nothing to further the aspirations of the Palestinian people for a sovereign and independent state. It badly damages the atmosphere with the very people with whom they ultimately need to make peace," she added.

Psaki said Secretary of State John Kerry was in touch with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the phone as recently as this weekend, while US diplomats "on the ground" have been talking to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

"There could be implications (for the PA) on assistance. There are a range of ways that could take place. Congress has a great deal of power in that regard," she noted, referring to legislation signed just last month by President Barack Obama that entitles Congress to halt funding to the West Bank if the PA brings criminal charges against Israel at the ICC.

The US provides some USD 400 million per year to the PA.

"Our focus right now is on engaging with both parties," Psaki said. "We've certainly conveyed at high levels our view on the ICC action and, obviously, we'd like to prevent it from moving forward."
