Japan FM, Kerry agree close cooperation in N. Korea hacking

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and US Secretary of State John Kerry confirmed on Tuesday that the two countries will maintain close coordination in tackling North Korean issues, including the alleged North Korean cyberattack on Sony. During their telephone conversation, Kishida strongly condemned the recent cyberattack into Sony Pictures Entertainment's computer system, which the US blamed on North Korea, Kishida told reporters after the talks.

"Japan recognizes that cyberattacks are grave issues that affect national security. We strongly condemn the hacking, and appreciate US' firm response to North Korea," Kishida told Kerry, according to the minister. Last week, US President Barack Obama signed an executive order to impose the financial sanctions on North Korean governmental organizations, corporations and related individuals in response to the alleged Pyongyang's "numerous provocations," particularly the latest hacking Sony over a comedy film, "The Interview," that depicts an assassination attempt on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. According to Kishida, they also agreed that the two countries will continue to contribute to peace and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world as this year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

The two ministers also vowed to make steady progress in a review of the Japan-US defense cooperation guidelines.
