Qatar- Player development top priority: Khelaifi

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Apart from organising the mega events like the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, the Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF) is also focusing on producing top tennis players, said the country's game governing body President Nasser bin Ghani Al Khelaifi yesterday.

"It is my dream to see Qatari players become a regular feature of major tournaments," said Al Khelaifi when asked about his vision of producing top tennis player from the country.

Jabor Mohammed Ali Mutawa, who got a wild card entry, is the only player representing the hosts in the main round.

Meanwhile, in the press conference which was held before opening day's matches of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, the QTF President appreciated the role of title sponsors.

"I would like to thank ExxonMobil Qatar for their support," he said.

"It is always an honour to have them as partner. They are supporting us since a long time and we hope to continue this partnership.

"Without their support we could have never been able to do this event like it is today," the QTF President said before hoping for another successful edition of the annual event.

"As you know we have four players from top ten rankings. Novak (Djokovic) is in Doha for the first time and then Rafa (Rafael Nadal), and then (David) Ferrer."

Flanked by Al Khelaifi at the press conference, the ExxonMobil Qatar President and General Manager Alistair Routledge hoped for a spectacular action in the event.

"We look forward to a very exciting tournament in presence of top players. Its 21st year of our sponsorship and truly we have benefited from this special relationship. We thank the team (QTF) for their hard work they do for delivering a successful event."
