Explaining Gay Marriage to a Child

With same-sex marriage being legal in 35 states including the District of Columbia it is becoming increasingly common to see families with two dads or two moms. While the topic of gay marriage seems to be frequently in the news it is still not nearly as common as marriage between heterosexuals. As a result children are curious about the subject and it is often not easy to explain.

One of the most frequently fielded questions regarding gay marriage is about how the child “got here.” Author and blogger Susan Goldberg references Cory Silverberg’s book “What Makes a Baby.” It explains the 4 things that every living person has in common: sperm an egg a womb to grow in and a home to grow up in. Using this frame of reference makes it relatively simple to explain to a child.

One of the things that Susan Goldberg strongly recommends is being honest with children at all times. While younger children will benefit from simpler explanations starting with the truth about where babies come from in same-sex marriages and “who is my real mom” will help kids become familiar with the concept earlier. And older children will appreciate the honesty even if it does take them some time to process the information.
