After Delhi rape GPS must now for Gujarat taxis

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Owners of all registered taxis operating at night will have to inform the police control room about their vehicles movements and furnish details such as the taxi number name and mobile phone number of the driver.

Alarmed by the recent rape of a woman by the driver of a smartphone application-based taxi service in Delhi the Gujarat government has ordered national as well as international cab service providers to install Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in their radio taxis each of which will have to be registered with the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs).

Under the rules and regulations of the new city taxi policy owners of all registered taxis operating at night will have to inform the police control room about their vehicle’s movements and furnish details such as the taxi number name and mobile phone number of the driver.

They will also have to give information about the locations the taxi may visit.

While the police verification of radio cab drivers is mandatory these rules will not be applicable to local taxi drivers.

Cab operators will have to display details on the back seat including driver’s name address phone number and license number as well as a working number of the main operator along with the police emergency number. Taxis will not have tinted window panes.

A road transport ministry official told Khaleej Times said that no private car would be allowed to be used as a taxi adding that if a person wanted to allow his car to be used by a city taxi service he would have to convert the vehicle into a registered taxi and pay taxes accordingly.

So far there were no such rules in the state and not even police verification was required for drivers.

There are around 45000 registered taxis in Gujarat and 7500 in Ahmedabad where some 2500 private vehicles are also used as taxi.
