(MENAFNEditorial)

Although we now expect the Hungarian National Bank (MNB)'s base rate to remain fairly low through to the end of 2015 we see little to indicate that household spending will pick up significantly over the course of the year. Whil e the country's economy will continue its gradual recovery thereby supporting its food and drink industry continuing unpredictable policy-making and high corporate tax rates have the potential to impact negatively on investment inflows.

Key Company Trends

Government Targets Big Supermarkets To Operate At A Profit Or Close : A bill was presented to the Hungarian government by Minister of the Economy Mihaly Varga in November 2014 proposing to shutdown large supermarkets if they fail to make a profit for two years running. The government is considering the measures as a response to concerns that the big supermarkets are deliberately operating at a loss for competition purposes. If the bill receives approval it will apply to all mass grocery retail (MGR) outlets with an annual turnover of EUR163mn or more. This would hit mainly the big foreign owned retailers who are already trying to absorb huge increases in the cost of government inspections. The industry is also concerned about proposals to stop Sunday opening for large retail outlets.
