UAE- Six students among 10 killed in Kerala road accidents


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Six engineering students were killed when the car in which they were returning after attending a New Year bash at the Varkala beach resort rammed into a tanker lorry.

Trivandrum: Ten lives were lost in four separate road accidents in Kerala on the New Year day on Thursday.



Six engineering students were killed when the car in which they were returning after attending a New Year bash at the Varkala beach resort rammed into a tanker lorry near Chathanur in Quilon district at around 2 am.



The deceased who were third year students of TKM Engineering College at Quilon have been identified as Nixon Eby Mathew Aju Prakash Syed Insam A Thangal Arun K Sabu Atul Shah and Sijo George John.



According to the police all the students (aged 20) had died on the spot. The bodies were taken out by police and local people by breaking open the car that got jammed under the impact of the collision.



The driver of the tanker lorry who was taken into custody by the police said that the car was at high speed. The driver said that the car had rammed into the lorry while overtaking another vehicle. The driver suffered minor injury.



Two persons were killed and a child was injured in another accident on the National Highway 47 at Kodangallur in Trichur district. The accident occurred when the car in which they were going to Mukham in Calicut district hit a tree. The deceased have been identified as Abdul Nasser (55) and Abdul Salam (44).



The third accident claimed the life of a 33-year-old Non-resident Keralite (NRK). Rajesh R Unnithan who came on leave from Gulf was killed when the bike in which he was travelling was hit by a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus at Pandalam on the wee hours of Thursday.



The tenth person was killed when he was knocked down by a speeding Innova car at Palluruthy in Cochin at 5.30 am. The deceased is Harilal (65). After knocking down Harilal; the car rammed into a nearby bakery.



The mishaps come days after the state government announced a new programme to check road accidents by strictly implementing traffic rules. The programme called ‘Subha Yatra-2015’ was to be implemented from January 1 2015.



The aim of the programme proposed in the wake of steady increase in the number of human casualties was to make the state a zero accident one. Accidents claim nearly 4000 lives every year and leave at least 40000 injured.



As many as 3517 people were killed and 36398 injured in road mishaps in the state during the 10 month-period ending November. The number of road accidents during the period was 32230 according to information furnished in the assembly.
