'Amiri Hospital firmly continues to achieve its promising goals'


(MENAFN- Arab Times) KUWAIT CITY Oct 17 (KUNA): It's been 65 years since the opening of the Amiri Hospital and it firmly continues toward achieving its promising goal and to save lives through healthcare delivery. Al-Amiri Hospital located in Kuwait City was the first government hospital to be built in Kuwait after relying on the American hospital completely.

In 1941 the Consultative Council approved the construction of Al-Amiri Hospital and the process was disrupted due to World War II but the construction was completed when the war ended and the hospital was launched in 1949. At that time the hospital contained 45 beds and an operating theater a laboratory and a pharmacy. It has since been expanded several times after it was torn down completely and rebuilt in 1984.

At the time of its opening it had several doctors and due to increasing number of patients several wings were added. By 1961 the hospital had 15 wings with 620 beds. In an interview Amiri Hospital Director Dr Afrah Al-Sarraf stated the hospital is striving to continue with its course toward achieving the distinguished status in the field of health care and every year new sections are opened in addition to expansion works to provide better health services. Dr Al-Sarraf added the hospital currently consists of several medical departments such as pediatric and surgery with its various sections; internal and nuclear medicine and physiotherapy among others. She added the accident section receives a huge number of patients on a daily basis especially at night with an average of 313 patients.

She added inauguration of the new building for external clinics in the second half of 2013 is a new addition for the hospital which paves the way for inauguration of new clinics under new specifications such as Nose Ear and Throat; besides the psychological clinics. She indicated a clinic will be opened for natural medicine plus two specialized clinics and psychological clinics in coordination with the Psychiatry Hospital. She noted three clinics will be open weekly for consultation with patients from Capital Health Zone suffering from psychological disorders. She disclosed inaugurating a clinic for early diagnosis of rheumatism and establishing a unit for children in addition to a unit for chest and respiratory diseases and a common clinic linking diabetes and cardiac diseases units for patients living with the two diseases. Add to this a joint clinic linking diabetes unit with the dental section to check diabetic patients before referring them to dentists.
