Dubai — After riding Daar Zayed to victory in the second race leading Brazilian jockey Silvestre De Sousa came from nowhere to bring Atlantic Brave home in the feature 1400m TB Handicap the fourth of the night in the final meeting of the 2014 at Meydan on Wednesday.

Richard Mullen set the early pace with UAE debutant Double Dealer but having been off the track for 823 days the six-year-old son of Dubawi ran out of gas in the concluding stages when he was attacked by Atlantic Brave Marching Time and Yaa Wayle. The winner has just prevailed as only a Short head and a nose have separated between the three top finishers and the Latin American has completed a quick double in the process.

Richard Mullen steered Filfil home to deny top weight Muhtaram Silvestre De Sousa up in the 1600M TB Handicap the third race on the card. De Sousa pushed Muhtaram to go directly to the lead as the pack began to swing for home but Filfil did not wait too long to allow the clear cut favourite Muhataram sufficient time to dominate and on to emerge easy winner.

“He’s a good horse who is acting fast. He came from off the pace and battled through the kickback” said the winning jockey Richard Mullen later. Zabeel trainer Satish Seemar was delighted and praised the good work of his team noting that the yard does not have that big amount of horses for the Carnival but promised to fight with what they have. Mubtaahij ridden by Dane O’Neill made it a winning start for his South African champion trainer Mike De Kock after the two-year-old landed the 1400m TB Handicap opening race with a record smashing performance in the silks of Shaikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum.

Having raced lightly in UK the home-bred Dubawi colt broke nicely and raced against the fences as Richard Mullen had won the start with Year Of Glory and the pair kicked away from the rest of the field before the Englishman pushed the button in the final furlong to prevail by less than a length on the line.

In the second race a 1400m TB Handicap former Godolphin jockey Silvestre De Sousa continued his impressive run with a second record breaking performance onboard unfancied Daar Zayed to make virtually all and held gamely in front of Mooqtar who chased the winner home under Dane O’Neill.

De Sousa commented: “She’s a nice filly and I’m delighted to see her doing very well on her first start at Meydan.” Trained by Musabah Al Muhairi at the Oasis-1 for Mohammed Abdulla Bel Obaida the four-year-old daughter of Kheleyf did everything right to lead at the start and held on very strongly when it mattered.

The fifth race was won by outsider Muaanid under Sam Hitchcott for trainer Doug Watson and the final race was won by Diwan under Patrick Dobbs to complete a double for his boss Doug Watson to finish the year in style.
