IFRC calls for more international support to Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The International Federation of Red Crescent and Red Cross (IFRC) called on Tuesday for more international support to the war-stricken Syria.

"There is no option but to step up the humanitarian response," said the IFRC in a press release from its headquarters in Geneva.

Almost four years after the armed conflict broke out, many clinics in Syria have been partially functioning due to damage, or are closed because of the conflict. People who have fled their homes are struggling to access medicines and basic healthcare.

In response, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is calling for additional funds, expanding the budget for healthcare within its emergency appeal from some USD 5 million to USD 15 million.

The organization is also calling for funds to provide food and hygiene kits. The overall appeal budget is now 122 million Swiss francs aiming to reach 8 million people by the end of 2015.

"Humanitarian needs remain huge within Syria, and they continue to grow," said Secretary General of the IFRC Elhadj As-Sy,, who visited Syria on 21-22 December to witness the situation on the ground.

"Health is an area of primary concern. We do not want to see people who survived bombs and bullets, die because they could not get to a doctor, or receive the medicines they need to treat common illnesses."
