More Good News About Green Tea in the Fight Against Skin Cancer

(MENAFNEditorial)

December 26 2014 - Researchers from University of Alabama at Birmingham recently announced the results of a study into the use of Green Tea Polyphenols in the fight against malignant melanoma. Malignant melanoma is the least common of skin cancers however it is responsible for 75% of all deaths from skin cancer and studies show that the deadly form of cancer is on the rise among children. At this time doctors have found no effective strategy against this particular type of cancer and the average survival of patients inflicted with melanoma is less than year.

However doctors Ram Prasad and Santosh Katiyar reported in the journal Cancer Research that they received encouraging results by the novel introduction of polyphenols from green tea into chemotherapy. Green tea has been shown in previous studies to have an inhibitory effect on various kinds of skin cancers. Intrigued the researchers investigated the effect of adding green tea as part of a chemotherapy routine.

Polyphenols are a class of antioxidant that has been getting a lot of press recently due to their apparent ability to boost the immune system fight the effects of aging and reduce inflammation. The widely touted antioxidant in red wine and dried mulberries resveratrol is one popular example of a polyphenol. Polyphenols are a large class of chemical compounds found in plants. They are characterized by the presence of more than one phenol unit or building block per molecule. A phenol unit consists of a six-membered aromatic hydrocarbon ring bonded directly to a hydroxyl group (-OH). The simplest of the class is phenol (C6H5OH) which has long been used as an antiseptic. They are also called phenolics. Poly means many which refers to the large number of groupings of the basic phenol rings. There are over 4000 polyphenol compounds.

In this study researchers found that polyphenols from green tea were effective in damaging the DNA of cancer cells and consequently inhibiting their growth. This was a lab study and did not involve live subjects but the results are encouraging and offer some hope for victims of malignant melanoma.

US-based tea company Immortalitea commented in conjunction with the study 'Green tea has been shown in other studies to have many other health benefits including anti-aging boosting the immune system and helping with weight loss. Other than the well-known and usually mild effect of caffeine there are no common adverse side effects to drinking green tea. With the possible inclusion of helping fight one of the most deadly cancers there is a more and more compelling case for making green tea you beverage of choice.'
