Lavrov, Kerry discuss Mideast peace process

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry discussed by phone on Monday ways to resume the long-stalled Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.

The conversation, initiated by Kerry, coincided with Arab efforts to take the Palestinian-Israeli dispute to the UN Security Council in a bid to end the Israeli occupation within a specific time frame, according to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has reportedly said he will present to the UNSC a draft resolution envisaging the resumption of the peace talks, an ultimatum for these talks and ending the Israeli occupation as a prelude to Palestinian statehood.

Russia stated support to the planned UNSC vote while the United States warned that it would veto it.
