Cabinet discusses challenges facing Aqaba

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)  Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority needs a "re-launch" which will help it in meeting the goals set at the time of its establishment and to bring it in line with the Royal vision of turning the port city into a major contributor to the national economy.

During the Cabinet meeting on Sunday, where the premier listened to a briefing from the Chief Commissioner of Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, Hani Mulki, Ensour stressed the need to give further attention and follow-up on what has been achieved in Aqaba.

The premier stressed that work must proceed in an integrated fashion between all ministries and the Aqaba authority. He pointed out that the talk about Aqaba being an independent authority was not accurate.

Ensour warned that the strikes in Aqaba have cost the government millions, with the volume of work at the port of Aqaba falling by about 21 to 22 percent during the current year, when compared to last year. He said the unjustified strikes did great harm to the country's economy.

Mulki spoke about the main challenges and problems facing the Aqaba Authority, pointing to the strikes that led to an increase in the cost of shipping.

He stressed the importance of stimulating growth in sectors such as transport, logistics, industry and tourism to reduce the cost of land, electricity and water, which would contribute to strengthening Aqaba's economic role.
