Bani Rsheid trial to resume next Sunday

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency)  The State Security Court has made out a prima facie case in the trial of the Muslim Brotherhood deputy overall chief, Zaki Bani Rsheid. The trial was postponed till next Sunday when the defence team is due to present its evidence.

The court listened to testimonies by two prosecution witnesses against Rsheid, who is accused of publishing an article on social media criticising the United Arab Emirates, and is facing charges of trying to "sour the Kingdom's relations with a foreign country." The witnesses told the court that they had read the article on Facebook and passed on the material, which was sent to the prosecutor general. However, the head of the team defending Bani Rsheid, Lawyer Saleh Armouti, disputed the testimonies, arguing that the two witnesses are adversaries in the case.

Armouti said he had appealed to the court to give the defence team time to present its evidence in next Sunday's session, adding that he will submit to the court a written statement about the State Security Court Law and the Anti-Terrorism Law.

The court agreed to the request and also consented that the defence team will sit with the defendant in court and can "take the time they want." The defendant was arrested and remanded in custody on November 20.
