China kicks off construction of new USD13b airport in Beijing

(MENAFN) Construction of a massive new international passenger airport in Beijing kicked off, as booming demand for travel to and from China exceeded existing facilities, Oman Observer reported.

The airport's cost is set at USD13 billion, with plans to be completed in about five years, local state media reported, adding that the new airport can handle up to 620,000 flights per year.

The current international airport is currently the world's second busiest, but also one of the most delayed, with fewer than 20 percent of commercial passenger flights leaving on schedule.

The soaring demand comes as the country has grown to the world's second-largest economy, with the capital's current international airport has begun to reach its capacity limits.
