17 opposition fighters killed in clashes south of Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Up to 17 fighters of the Syrian opposition have been killed in clashes with the regime's forces and allied militias in Quneitra city south of the country, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Syrian regime's helicopters dropped barrel bombs on areas in the towns of Um Batna and Masahara in Quneitra countryside, as 17 of the Syrian opposition, at least, were killed, among them two commanders, the UK-based Observatory added.

The Syrian opposition had launched a campaign to seize control of several neighborhoods from the regime in Quneitra suburbs.

In the meantime, the monitoring group said the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) launched attacks in areas of the border town of Ain Al-Arab (Kobane).

Fierce clashes ensued with the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units, as the regime's jets hit ISIL posts and ammunition caches on the Kobane-Aleppo route.

In a related development, the Observatory documented the killing of 52 people in two massacres by the Syrian warplanes in the town of AlBab and neighboring Qabaseen, in Aleppo's countryside, north of Syria. The two areas, with a Kurdish majority, are controlled by ISIL.
