After Cabinet nod, Nepal may revise Air Service Agreement with Oman

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A seven-member team from Nepal arrived in Muscat on Saturday night to revise the Air Service Agreement (ASA) between the two countries and discuss the possibility of Royal Nepal Airlines flying into the sultanate.

Talking to Muscat Daily Bharat Kumar chargé d'affaires at the Embassy of Nepal in Muscat said 'The Nepal government is all set to revise the ASA with Oman. The delegation is headed by tourism secretary Suresh Man Shrestha.'

The Nepal cabinet on Friday gave the go-ahead to the Ministry of Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA) to review the ASA with Oman.

'We proposed to the cabinet for a revision in the ASA as Oman had been requesting us for the same for a long time. The cabinet on Friday endorsed our proposal' Suresh Acharya joint secretary of MoCTCA was quoted in the Nepalese media reports.

Though Nepal and Oman signed the ASA in 1997 air services between the two countries began only in 2010.

Oman Air started flights on the Muscat-Kathmandu route in September 2010. As per the existing ASA Oman Air can operate only seven flights a week.

Kumar said 'The agreement will probably be signed on Monday and also the possibility of Royal Nepal Airlines starting flights to Oman will be discussed. Once the agreement is revised there is a possibility of increasing the number of Oman Air flights to Nepal from the existing seven per week. The number of flights will be decided at the meeting.'

Acharya said 'We will also see whether Oman can provide training to employees of the Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) as the country has some of the best training centres in the world' adding that they would also explore a code sharing option.

Kumar said senior officials from the ministry in Nepal civil aviation authorities and representatives from the embassy will attend the meeting.
