Qatar to host 19th meeting of GCC Environment Ministers


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar has taken part in the 18th session of GCC ministers in charge of the environment in Kuwait.

The Minister of Environment H E Ahmed Amer Mohamed Al Humaidi led Qatar's delegation to the meeting.

Addressing the closing session, he invited the ministers to attend the next meeting in Qatar.

He thanked Kuwait for chairing the meeting and the worm hospitality accorded to participants.

The meeting discussed issues, including cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the regional office for West Asia, the Regional Organisation for the Protection of the Marine Environment and cooperation with Turkey, Jordan and Morocco in the environment field.

The ministers discussed a draft Gulf environmental ePortal which will help collect data and disseminate environmental knowledge to the international community; the proposed GCC network on land degradation studies and the Sultan Qaboos Award for the Human Affairs and Environmental Sector.

The ministers were briefed on developments with regard to the GCC award for the environment and wildlife, preparations for a GCC convention on the protection of the environment and a memorandum referred by the standing committee for the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats on the creation of a GCC environmental security force.

Qatar had chaired the 43rd meeting of GCC undersecretaries responsible for environmental affairs on Tuesday in Kuwait to prepare for the meeting of GCC minsters.
