Dubai: A gang of five persons three Pakistanis and two Afghans was on Thursday referred to the Dubai criminal court for allegedly possessing and smuggling 20kg of heroin into the country after concealing the quantity inside nuts.
Part of the quantity was seized in Dubai and the rest of it was seized in Ajman as the suspects were taking it to a trader.
According to court records the case dated January this year when the anti-narcotics department of the Dubai Police was tipped off by a police informer that one person possessed a huge quantity of narcotics which he intended to sell. The informer also told the police that the suspect was staying in a hotel in the city.
A trap was laid and when the suspect identified as A.S. 51 came to the lobby with a suitcase the police arrested him and confiscated the suitcase. Initially the suspect denied he had anything to do with the suitcase but later handed the key of the suitcase to the officers who opened and found heroin packets rolled up.
The suspect who was found to be on a visit visa told the police he had received the suitcase from a person in Ajman and was told that it had to be sold to another person in Dubai as per the instructions of a person in Pakistan.
After coordination with the Ajman Police Dubai Police officers apprehended the second suspect a Pakistani driver identified as A.A.K 39 along with the third suspect an Afghan trader identified as M.R.M. 41 who was carrying two travel bags. Police opened and searched the bags and found nuts inside them. They also found rolled up heroin packets stashed in hidden pockets in the bottom of the bags. The seized heroin in the bags weighed 20.4kg.
On interrogation it appeared that the fourth suspect a Pakistani who worked as a salesman identified as K.M.H 26 and the fifth suspect also a Pakistani identified as M.A.M. 34 were the ones who brought the contraband into the country. They were referred to the public prosecution which charged them with possessing and promoting drugs. They were sent to the criminal court where they denied the charges. The court adjourned the case to the next hearing that will be on January 19.
