The S&P 500 hits 52nd record high of 2014

U.S. equities gained on Friday albeit in very light trading with many investors on holidays.

The Dow Jones added 0.1% to 18054 while the S&P 500 gained 0.3% to 2088.77 - its 52nd record high of 2014.

The NASDAQ hit a 14-year high and climbed 0.7% to 4807.


Commodities

Silver for March delivery was one of the best performers and rallied 2.8% to US$16.147 an ounce.

Gold for February delivery climbed 1.9% to settle at US$1195.30 an ounce.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange PGM's were also firmer.

Platinum for April delivery added 2.3% to US$1219.90 an ounce which was the metals best day since December 1. Palladium for March advanced 1.3% to US$818.60 an ounce.

Crude oil in London and New York resumed its slide on Friday delivering a fifth week of losses.

February Brent lost 1.3% to US$59.45 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange. Trading was light following the Christmas holiday.

February West Texas Intermediate sank 2% to US$54.73 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
