Maharashtra CMs city Nagpur gets new IIM

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) It is not just different states in India that are competing to attract investments and prestigious academic and medical institutions; even cities in Maharashtra are doing exactly that.

After the Indian government announced in July the setting up five new Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) across the country including in Maharashtra several local administrations and politicians began lobbying for their respective cities.

But the ultimate victor turned out to be Nagpur the hometown of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister for Road transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari. Politicians in cities such as Pune and Aurangabad are a dejected lot after Wednesday’s announcement by the government but are hoping that the BJP governments — both at the centre and in the state — will come out with attractive offers.

For Nagpur the second capital of Maharashtra where the winter session of the state legislature has just concluded this will be the second prestigious higher education institution to be set up. In July the union government had also announced that one of the five new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMSs) would be set up in Nagpur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to perform the ground-breaking ceremony for the two prestigious institutions in Nagpur early next month.

According to Fadnavis the new IIM at Nagpur will start operations from the new academic session in 2015-16. It will start classes from a rented accommodation at the Visveswaraya National Institute of Technology.

The state government has allotted nearly 300 acres of land at the Mutli-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (Mihan) an ambitious project launched by the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government which has however failed to make much headway.

India already has 13 IIMs considered to be among the most prestigious B-schools in the country. However only the top three — those in Ahmedabad Kolkata and Bengaluru — are comparable with similar institutions in the developed world.
