At Least 30 People Died after Boat Sank on the Congo River

(MENAFN- QNA) At least 30 people died when an overcrowded boat hit a rock and sank on the Congo River, sparking riots in which angry youths on the rampage set fire to public buildings, officials said.

According to media reports, crowds of angry people have set fire to government buildings, and went on a rampage on Friday, four days after the accident in the country's eastern region, which left at least 30 people dead.

Authorities in Congo had said dozens of people are missing and feared dead after the boat sank on the Congo River.

Hubert Moliso, a minister in the northern Orientale province quoted by the Associated Press, said Tuesday that the passengers were sleeping when the accident took place near the town of Lombolombo.

Witnesses said they believed more than 200 people were aboard along with tons of merchandise.

The accident comes less than two weeks after a boat sank on Lake Tanganyika in Katanga province that left at least 130 dead, according to local authorities.
