Oman limits Domperidone usage


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Following recent studies which point at dangerous side effects from prolonged or high dosage of Domperidone the Directorate General for Pharmacy and Drug Control of the Ministry of Health has issued a circular limiting its usage. 

Domperidone is registered in the sultanate under names such as Motillium Dompi Brokonin Costi Predom and Motilat. The committee has set the maximum dosage for adults and teenagers weighing over 35kg to not more than 10mg TID (three times a day) oral or 30mg for not more than a week.

Children under 35kg may take only up to 0.25mg for each kilogram of their body weight for not more than a week.

Dr Thashli Thankachen an internal medicine specialist at Lifeline Hospital said 'The medicine is usually used to suppress nausea and serious acid reflux. It is recommended by a lot of general physicians on a regular basis. It is used irrationally in the market. As it is a hormone related medication the side effects are on the brain include slowing of gastric movement and on the heart.'
