Palestinian official says UN statehood vote to happen this year

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Voting on an Arab draft resolution submitted to the UN Security Council to set a timeframe to end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories is to take place by the end of this year, visiting Chief Palestinian Negotiator Saeb Erekat said here on Tuesday.

Some amendments happened to the first draft resolution in light of consultations of the Palestinian leadership, Erekat told Russia's radio in a statement.

Palestine seeks to join several international conventions, including International Criminal Court (ICC), he said, noting that if Washington votes against the draft resolution at the UNSC, Palestinian Authority may head to the ICC to recognize an independent state of Palestine.

In a related development, Erekat held talks with Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and the horizons of pushing ahead the process of peaceful settlement, said a statement issued here.

The two sides also discussed the situations in Syria and Iraq as well as terrorism threatening them, it noted.

Erekat briefed Lavrov on the Palestinian efforts aimed at pushing forward negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians in the light of the current draft resolution, it said.

The statement reiterated that the peaceful solution is the only way for solving the Palestinian issue in accordance with international legitimacy.

Erekat arrived in Moscow two days ago to consult with Russia on the draft resolution.

Russian Permanent Representative in the UN Vitaly Churkin announced Russia's support to the draft resolution at the UNSC.
