Crude oil spurts higher

Crude-oil futures jumped overnight after getting an extra lift from strong U.S. economic growth and after some Arab members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries said they see a rebound to US$70 to US$80 a barrel next year.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange West Texas Intermediate futures for delivery in February settled up 3.4% at US$57.12 a barrel.

The contract hit a settlement low of US$54.36 last Thursday.

February Brent crude on London’s ICE Futures exchange was up 0.5% at US$61.97 a barrel.

Oil prices have fallen about 45% since June.
