Air India uses CAT 3 to overcome fog delays

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  Air India has put into service on Delhi-Dubai-Delhi sector Boeing-777 ER aircraft t which can land safely during fog with trained pilots and crew members with the CAT 3 system that helps flights to land safely even during fog, an airline statement said.

The introduction of the Boeing-777 ER (AI-996) on Dubai-Delhi Sector from December 23 till January 16 enables more seating capacity with 341 seats (including 35 in business and four in first class) in place of earlier 256.

"The additional seat capacity during the holiday season will help mitigate the increased demand," Prem Sagar, Manager - Dubai & Northern Emirates told
Khaleej Times.

"The initiatives to implement CAT 3 operations during fog will ensure seamless connectivity to Delhi and beyond during this period," said Sagar. Air India and its subsidiary, Air India Express, a low-cost carrier, operate a total of 140 weekly flights from 16 Indian destinations to Dubai and Sharjah, he said.

Melwin D' Silva, Regional Manager, Gulf, Middle East and Africa, for Air India, said the Indian carrier seeks to maintain highest standards of safety and will try to continue efforts to maintain highest levels of services to travelers.

"The requirement for Cat 3 system is that the aircraft, the crew and the airport has to be CAT 3 cleared. Fog normally happens in early morning and late evening in North India belt during December end and throughout January," the airline statement said.

Cat 3 landing can be done in virtually ZERO visibility, when runway visibility is just 50 meters. It is purely an instrument approach, based on precision radio signals from ground based station. The other advantage with the Cat 3 system is that take off can happen at 125 meters runway visibility for narrow body aircraft and 150 meters for wide body aircraft.

Air India's Boeing-777 ER aircraft on Delhi-Dubai-Delhi is the highest CAT 3 cleared category to land in India during fog.
