(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU Monday congratulated Beji Caid Essebsi on his election as the new President of Tunisia.
"Tunisians have written a historical page in the country's democratic transition," said EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in a statement here tonight.
She said the EU remains committed to working with the new Tunisian authorities and all segments of society, to contribute to the consolidation of democratic gains under the new Constitution, and to support the implementation of reforms necessary for economic transition and social benefit of all Tunisians.
"Throughout the electoral process, the Tunisian people sent a message of hope to all people who, like him, aspire to a more peaceful, democratic and prosperous (Tunisia)," said the EU foreign policy chief.
The privileged partnership that binds Tunisia to the EU provides the appropriate framework for strengthening bilateral relations. The EU remains determined to use all the potential in the shared interests of our citizens, she stressed.
Mogherini added that the EU supported the entire electoral process and also deployed an election observation mission in Tunisia.
