22 December 2014: Diesel-powered cars could soon be outlawed in the British capital which may force drivers to rethink their options when buying a car.
Cars with diesel engines could vanish from the streets of London before the end of the decade according to the Telegraph which would pave the way for a wider prohibition of these vehicles nationwide according to some experts.
A ban on diesel vehicles has already been announced on the other side of the English Channel in Paris with London Mayor Boris Johnson thought to be in the process of following suit for his own city in an attempt to dramatically reduce the amount of air pollution in the capital.
Although an outright ban in the UK has not yet been implemented the congestion charge is set to rise by £10 for this type of car by 2020. Campaigners seeking cleaner greener urban environments across the country argue that this does not go far enough.
For drivers this could mean buying a second hand car which is not powered by a diesel engine instead opting for a petrol hybrid of even full electric alternative.
Self-driving cars are set to grace the UK's roads for the first time next year pointing to a brave new world of motoring in which the vehicle is in charge and every human road user a passenger. This could lead to further efficiencies although the banning of diesel in London and further afield may have ramifications for the market as a whole.
