UAE firms rank low in data protection

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Data loss is up by 400 per cent since 2012 while surprisingly 71 per cent of organisations are still not fully confident in their ability to recover after a disruption.

A new study of IT firms across 24 countries has placed the UAE at the bottom of a data protection index. Firms in the UAE reportedly lost an average 1.28 terabyte data last year and 56 per cent organisations faced unplanned downtime according to the findings released by EMC Corporation.

“In the UAE we see a lot of spending on IT infrastructure but companies have to pay more attention to data protection” said Fady Richmany Senior Regional Director for Data Protection at EMC.

As per the study the UAE currently ranks 24th in terms of enterprises’ maturity and approach towards data protection.

The study found that data loss and downtime cost enterprises in the UAE is 2.8 billion yet only 34 per cent of all surveyed organisations in the UAE considered data protection to be totally critical to their success.

“We hope the survey will send a wake-up call for IT decision makers emphasising the need to protect data and avoid unplanned downtime” added Fady.

China Hong Kong The Netherlands Singapore and US lead the index which surveyed IT decision-makers in companies with more than 250 employees. Firms were asked specific questions relating to their backup and recovery experience strategy and infrastructure.

Experts suggest innovations in mobile and hybrid cloud will create new challenges for data protection. Globally the study estimates data loss and downtime cost enterprises $1.7 trillion in the last 12 months.
