Dubai: A Tajik woman was arrested at Dubai International Airport allegedly with more than 1kg of heroin in her possession. As many as 59 pills of methadone were also seized from her on September 17.

The 33-year-old woman on a visit visa stood trial in the Court of First Instance on the charge of possessing drugs for peddling.

An anti-narcotics police major said that they were tipped off by a reliable source that the defendant would bring a quantity of drugs and mind-altering pills. “A circular was issued to arrest her if she tried to enter through the Dubai airport. On September 17 she arrived and she was detained by the anti-narcotics police” the major told the prosecutor.

When asked whether she had any baggage the accused denied carrying any. She was referred to the Narcotics General Directorate.

However it was revealed later in the evening that a bag was reported as not being claimed by any passengers on the same flight of the accused. “Anti-narcotics officers including a female officer took the accused back to the airport. She again denied that her bag could be at the Lost and Found section.”

A customs woman officer opened the bag and a wallet was found with the defendant’s photo inside.

“Asked whether it was her bag and about the reason her photo was inside the visitor then admitted that it was her bag” the major added.

While searching the bag the customs inspector found a plastic bag containing a substance suspected to be heroin. Another bag containing methadone tablets was also found inside the woman’s bag.

The defendant confessed to the officers that she was aware she was carrying drugs but did not know the kind of substance. “She admitted that a man asked her to transport the drugs and she was to get more instructions about the person who would collect the drugs once she exited the airport.”

An anti-narcotics police sergeant said during investigation that he was the interpreter when the defendant gave a statement. “She reportedly admitted that she was to get Dh20000 for the job.”

The drugs were seized from her and she was referred back to the General Directorate of Narcotics.

She was also sent to the General Directorate of Criminal Evidence to give a urine sample test for any traces of drugs.
